Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

Walking through that door
Outside we came nowhere at all
Perhaps the answers here
Not there anymore

She brightens up when she sees me.  There is recognition.

But she sits down, she is tired.  It’s at the end of the day.   It was convenient for me to come at this time and I had established a routine of going to dinner just to get her out and something to do.  She is glad to see me, however, she fades in the chair.

“What are we doing?”

I say what we are doing.  Going to dinner.

Recognition flickers.

House of four doors
You’ll be lost now forever
House of four doors
Rest of life’s life forever
“You tired?”
“Yes”
“Want to rest for awhile?”
“Yes”
She sits back and rests, falls asleep.
Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

House of four doors
I could live there forever
House of four doors
Would it be there forever?
We celebrated her 95 birthday.

Enter in all ye who seek to find within
As the plaque said on the last door
Time it was
And what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence
A time of confidences

Long ago it must be

I have a photograph

Preserve your memories
They’re all that’s left you.

Hi Mark, this is Kathy Winterbourne Hamlin, your 1st cousin, Uncle Bob’s daughter. My brother Steven and wife found this site, and forwarded it to me. I had lost touch with your mom 6 years ago. I had tried calling her at the number she had given me, but it no longer was in use. I was wondering if she was doing ok. I see she has made it to a good age of 95, but has some memory issues. My dad past away two years ago at 95. He was in fairly good health, but had a little dementia. He bumped into a book shelf in April of 2016, and fractured a rib, and was in a lot of pain, and decided to check out, after a couple months, shortly after his 95th birthday. He passed away June 4th. My mom is 92, and still lives in Rancho Bernardo, Ca. by herself. She and dad we divorced when they were in their 60’s, and each had remarried, but lost their spouses to illness.
I hope all is well with you and your sisters, Tammy and Jan. The last time I saw your mom, was many yeats ago, when I brought down my family. We went to lunch, and she took me to her beach house and beach in Del Mar. Tammy was there with her children too. It has been forever since I’ve seen you. If you can, maybe you could email me, and give me a little update on your family. Take care. Kathy
